What You Need to Know About Medicare

Medicare is a federal program designed to provide health insurance to the elderly and disabled. People become Medicare-eligible at the age of 65. Those under the age of 65 may qualify for Medicare if they have been diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease or have received Social Security Disability Insurance benefits for a designated period of time. Medicare plans are funded by Social Security and Medicare taxes, premiums paid by those with Medicare, and by federal funds.

Medicare-eligible people may enroll in either Original Medicare, which is the traditional program provided by the federal government directly, or a Medicare Advantage plan, a private insurance plan offered by insurance companies through a contract with the government.

WHAT DO MEDICARE PLANS COVER?

The Original Medicare program is divided into two parts. Medicare Part A covers healthcare costs related to care and treatment received in a hospital or skilled nursing facility. In some cases, Part A may cover at-home care.

Part B covers medical supplies and services that are required to treat the insured patient’s condition. Expenses typically covered by Part B include outpatient care, preventative care, durable medical equipment, and ambulance expenses. Part B also covers home health services, like physical rehabilitation or speech-language pathology, if these services are ordered by the patient’s doctor.

WHEN SHOULD I ENROLL IN MEDICARE?

In most situations, Medicare is available to people of age 65. The enrollment period begins 3 months before you turn 65 and lasts for 7 months. If you are receiving Social Security benefits, you will be enrolled automatically. If you are not receiving Social Security, applying for Medicare as soon as your enrollment period begins is likely the right thing to do. Even if you only wait until the day you turn 65, your Medicare Part B coverage could be delayed.

Are you still working? Are you part of a union group health plan or employer-sponsored group health plan? You may not need to enroll immediately.
